Embrace Mindless Fun: 11 Ways to Microdose Joy

Feeling overwhelmed? Here are several fun methods to add bite-size merriment to your day. No major time commitment required.

By Mia Brabham

People are opting for the seemingly simple but oh-so-radical act of microdosing joy as a playfully defiant alternative to completing an activity in its entirety. The practice is devoted to breaking up brain-boggling activity into easily achievable parts rather than carving out time to complete it all at once.

Engaging in play for tiny bursts of time has been proven to be a powerful way to take a break from screens, invest in one’s cognitive health and focus, and reconnect with one’s self or loved ones. Cyndie Spiegel, author Microjoys: Finding Hope (Especially) When Life Is Not Okay, describes microjoys as “easily accessible moments of joy that exist regardless of our current circumstances.” These vessels for elation or comfort exist whether we are struggling, content, or experiencing the most ordinary of days.

“The reason that [microjoys are] so powerful,” the former Parsons School of Design and Fashion Institute of Technology professor explains, “is because you don’t have to earn them. You don’t have to be in a certain mindset to experience a microjoy. You don’t have to be in a good mood.”

Whether it’s walking outside for a moment to smell the daffodils or pulling out a smile-inducing childhood game, microdosing joy is an antidote to the constant hustling that adults experience daily. The opposite of stress, these diversions can bring us squarely into the present moment.

“Sometimes,” Spiegel says, “we need a break from our own reality. We need to break from everything else that is happening. When our brain feels like it’s going to break, it’s like, ‘Do something that is mindless.’” Tapping into memories and paying attention to surroundings are also ways to discover pint-size joys. “The only responsibility I have,” says Spiegel, “is to notice what is already there.” Anything sensory-based and brief will do the trick.

Karen Robinovitz, co-founder of the Sloomoo Institute, a slime museum for all ages with outposts in Chicago, Atlanta, and New York, acknowledges it’s become more difficult to take such moments for ourselves. “There’s so much coming at us,” she says, “and it’s really hard to not be in fight or flight as a human.” Taking a step away, Robinovitz adds, “enables you to come back to all the other things with a fresh head.”

The benefit of seeking out these micro moments is building what Spiegel calls a “well of joy” that can be tapped into at any time. Whatever brings comfort or sparks excitement needs no explanation. Set a timer for five or 10 minutes, choose an uplifting mini activity, and prepare to reap the benefits.

Creatives may be accustomed to watercolors or charcoal on canvas, but when was the last time they held a good ol’ hunky piece of colorful sidewalk chalk? Drawing and doodling with sidewalk chalk — whether it’s pictures, inspirational words, or both — can do wonders for physical and mental well-being. It doesn’t require much effort. If a larger masterpiece is the goal, it gives an incentive to step back into the sunshine later in the day to keep at it. Plus, the artwork will have an audience and brighten up someone else’s day.
