2020 is off and running. It’s the middle of a turbulent election year. Our screens and social media feeds are, more often than not, filled with doom and gloom. Sometimes, it might just feel better to put your head in the sand, unplug, and wait for things to get better.

But some people? They look at the same big, seemingly insurmountable issues, and instead of turning away, they run towards them. They endeavor to figure out a way to address these issues and to help change the way we think about them. And they find powerful new ways of engaging with their communities.

From community organizers and artists expressing new ideas to those starting businesses that offer new opportunities, Shondaland went out to talk to some of the extraordinary people who work every single day to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.

In the first of our new video series, Community, Shondaland profiled Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO of Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in South Los Angeles.

Since the hospital reopened in 2015, it has helped to transform the surrounding, often underserved communities nearby, by providing high quality healthcare and prioritizing the needs of patients. As Dr. Batchlor says, "We're a community hospital, we're here to serve the entire community — regardless of their income, their insurance coverage, their immigration status. We are open to everyone and welcoming to everyone."
