(slow music) - The role that fashion plays in the series is very big. I think fashion is very important to Anna. It's always important to have quality clothing. This is a very fashion driven show. - I'll say this for Anna, the bitch knew how to dress. - The costumes, the wig, the fake teeth. It was a full transformation. - The clothes on this show are beautiful. - Chic, Parisian, couture. - I love your dress. - I know it's perfection. - Oh, thank you. - Our costume designer on this show is Lyn Paolo. - Lyn Paolo's amazing. - I have to say it's been one of the most fun projects I've ever worked on. I loved it. (cheering) I've been working with Shonda and Shondaland for, I don't even know how many years now. Shonda gives me the the cues I need. - She had so perfectly captured the characters. - If you have a good relationship and you stay together for a while, like I have with Shonda and I have with John Wells, you can read into what's on that page. - You look. - Thank you. - She captured Kate Burton's character with the caftan. She captured Neff and the way she would dress and who she would be. - I wanted her to be really, really colorful, just because that character is so full of love and joy. - That's my girl! That's my girl! That's my girl! - And then her uniform, which was such a big part of her character was I think also fun. I mean, we didn't wanna do a tie. So we did that lovely fold with the pin and everything was sort of trim on her. - You knew who Kacy was, you knew who Rachel was just by looking at the clothes. - What I loved about Kacy is that she's just no nonsense. So obviously, you know, she's a trainer, so we had that element of her, but then the element of her being very body conscious, very you know, very organized, really determined in her life and the fact that it wasn't just about training people, but it was also about giving life advice. - Baby, you do what they want you to do, go where they want you to go and you might get a great film, but you'll definitely get a great experience. The universe provides what you're meant to have. - Laverne was a great partner in that and what a body dress. - Oh my God. This is where Khloe posted from! - Let's take a selfie. - Working with Katie again was a riot. First of all because it was so different than on Scandal and one of the things we talked about early on was that we shouldn't have a trace of Quinn anywhere in this character. So we avoided any of those colors that our lovely Quinn would've worn. So it was challenging in the way that we've known each other for so long and I was trying not to ever repeat what we've done before. - You know, the way Vivian dresses versus the way everybody else dresses tells you where she stands in this world of high fashion and image and what she cares about. - We're telling stories about people who had impeccable eyes for fashion and style. - There's all this great stuff to try on. Are you coming? - You can go into a store and buy a complete outfit, but a real fashionista knows how to put all the pieces together and we wanted Anna to be a fashionista. - What do you think about these? - Anna curated her looks. - Ta da. - She had a plan and she looked at how the people around her were dressing, what they were like at a business meeting, how they looked in Brooklyn going to a jazz club, how they looked, you know, in Morocco. There's all these different venues and places and each time you see her in one of those places, she's changed her look, but she's accessorized everything beautifully. She has this intrinsic style. - People, whatever they see, they believe. They're gonna believe that that girl is a socialite and an heiress because she's dressed the part. - If you have the right jewelry, you have the right shoes, people look, even if you're in a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, but you throw on a Gucci jacket, people go, oh, okay. Yeah, she can go into the club. Do you know? It's that, isn't it? I mean, I know it shouldn't be that, but it is. - This girl wanted to borrow $40 million, but was swanning around in baby doll dresses with her boobs hanging out. - So no one took her seriously. - To lend money to, no. Some of these sleaze bags would shag her, sure, but she didn't look the part. She needed an in, she needed to get her bonafides in order. - How did she do that? - She's a smart girl. She started to dress the part, for one. - She was this amazing chameleon, this person who adapted and learned and changed how she looked and you see that throughout the whole series Anna wanted to be taken seriously in the world. So I was trying to find that middle ground, you know, that line where it's fashionable and it's amazing to look at, but it still says I'm a serious person and I want you to give me $10 million. - I have a vision. I have a sizable trust fund. I have an incredible advisory board and yet no one will consider my business proposal because of how I look. - Okay, I'm listening. - I think it is instrumental for the audience to understand maybe in a subliminal way that this person was learning and growing or at least mimicking the world that she was wanting to be in. - The fact that she turned her trial into a fashion show, I mean, the fact that she knew that image mattered enough to turn her trial into a fashion show. - Mattered to her that people understood that she dressed a certain way in a courtroom and Page Six picked that up. - Who's your stylist hook up, the one who does rappers? - Natasha. - Yeah. - Oh, you thinking trial style. - The real Anna had such a following online on Instagram and the whole court case people really did follow her and her stylist would Tweet for her about what she was wearing. - A courtroom is an unexpected venue for a fashion show. - We then had to do an enormous dive into all of Anna's Instagram. After that it was how do we find these designer items that are three or four years old? And it was reaching out to brands. It was really interesting. Some brands denied that it was their clothes. Well, we know it was their clothes. - Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the delay. Apparently our defendant is refusing to join us while she sorts out some ongoing wardrobe issue. - Lyn's a genius. - I hope that we elevated the fashion in the show. (smooth music)
